Offense Shines in Second Scrimmage

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University head coach Pete Rossomando led his troops onto the field Saturday morning for their second scrimmage of preseason camp – a scrimmage that signals a transition in the calendar from the conclusion of preseason drills to the start of game week preparation.

Similar to the first scrimmage, the LU offense was held off the scoreboard early in the scrimmage but once they hit their stride they didn't look back. The offense finished the day with seven touchdowns (four passing and three rushing) and two field goals (38 and 29 yards). Lamar's touchdowns came from six different players.

The Cardinal signal callers combined to complete 25-of-39 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns. Jakolby Longino led the group by completing 11-of-16 attempts for 105 yards and two touchdowns, while Robert Coleman was 7-of-11 for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Mike Chandler was 4-of-8 for 11 yards while Aiden McCown closed out the scrimmage completing 3-of-4 for 18 yards and a score.

As a group, the Cardinals carried the ball 64 times for 361 yards and three touchdowns. Two of the rushing scores came from Longino who carried the ball five times for 18 yards. His two touchdowns came from 17 yards and one yard out. The third rushing touchdown came from Damashja Harris (7-39) on a 13-yard scamper. R.J. Carver carried the ball a team-high 12 times for 39 yards while freshman Rashaad Johnson had six carries for a team-best 72 yards, including a 54-yard run to set up a touchdown.

The touchdown catches were all made by different receivers with the first one being hauled in by sophomore Izaha Jones from 26 yards out. Coleman put the ball in the air giving Jones the ability to use his size and jumping ability to beat out the defender.

The second score through the air was hauled in by redshirt freshman Jayden Boyd, while sophomore Sevonne Rhea snagged the third TD catch of the morning from Longino. Rhea made a spectacular one-hand grab while in the back right corner of the endzone. He ended the day with two catches for 55 yards and the score.

The final touchdown came from McCown to Vontravious Hall from 11 yards out.

Freshman Peyton Christian led the defense with four tackles, including a sack, while Kei'Trone Simpson added three stops on the day.
