BEAUMONT, Texas – In the coming days Lamar University will be holding its spring commencement, and the athletics department honored its 2023 graduating class by presenting them with their stoles to be worn during graduation.
 
A tradition that begin five years ago, the stoles were handed out each graduate by LU Director of Athletics Jeff O'Malley and associate AD for academics Helene Thill. The respective coaching staffs are also part of the ceremony.
 
Thursday morning, the Cardinals recognized one of their largest graduating classes with 40 student-athletes receiving their stoles. The group consisted of six graduates who are receiving their master's degree, representative from two teams that won a Southland Conference Championship this year (soccer and women's track and field) to go along with numerous all-conference and academic all-conference selections.
 
The sports represented include baseball (6), men's basketball (1), football (4), men's golf (2), men's tennis (1), men's cross country and track and field (3), women's basketball (2), women's golf (3), softball (4) – unable to attend due to competing at the SLC Championships, soccer (4), women's tennis (2), women's cross country and track and field (4) and volleyball (4).
