BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University has reached the midway point of its nine-game road swing which has the Cardinals (18-13/4-5 Southland) traveling to Houston for a rematch with Rice. The Cardinals head west having dropped four of their last five games, but event with the recent struggles remain within the thick of the conference race.
Tuesday's rematch will be of a contest from two weeks ago when the Owls recorded a 9-3 victory in Beaumont. It's been a similar story for Rice who has dropped five of its last seven games since facing LU. The Owls (15-17) are coming off a 4-0 victory Saturday against Louisiana Tech.
While the Owls lead the all-time series, 85-50 (.630), and have posted a 53-23 (.697) mark against Big Red in Houston, Rice has had some struggles at home this season. The Owls are just 8-7 (.533) in Reckling Park in 2023.
Tuesday's contest is just one of four for the Cardinals this week as they will travel to San Antonio Friday to open a three-game series against Southland-leading UIW. Big Red enters the week in a two-way tie for sixth in the league standings just two games back of the league leaders. The chase for the Southland Conference is shaping up to be a season-long battle that may not be decided until the final weekend of the season. The Cardinals are just two games back of the leaders and the entire conference is separated by just three games with 15 games still remaining.
First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. from Reckling Park. The game will be streamed live on the Conference USA Digital Network.
