Cardinals Sweep Prairie View A&M

BEAUMONT, Texas – In their next to last tune-up before the start of Southland Conference play, Lamar University hosted Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Beuamont Municipal Tennis Complex. The Cardinals outscored Prairie View, 11-0, on the day winning the first match 7-0 and then coming back in the second to record a 4-0 victory – the two teams agreed to stop the second match as soon as the fourth point was decided.

The Cardinals took the first two doubles matches to score a quick point and take the first lead of the day. Although the point was decided, the teams on court 2 finished off their match and although it was forced to a tiebreaker, the team of Ana Jolic and Noelia Lorca came through with a 7-6 (7-1) victory over Ruju Chauhan and Anette Lira.

It was more of the same in singles, as the Cardinals jumped out to early leads taking the first set in five of the six matches. Lamar was dominant posting four shutout sets in the opener.

The only first set that LU didn't win – No. 2 singles – saw Lorca battle back to take the second set to force a super tiebreak. In the end, Lorca outlasted Chauhan with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory.

The second match mirrored the first for the Cardinals (8-5) who have now four straight and six of their last seven. Big Red jumped out of the gate taking matches at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles for the first point. Moments later, the Cardinals had a 2-0 lead after PVAMU was forced to retire on court 2.

With a two-point lead, the Cardinals turned up the pressure with Elena Rubio and Megan Do finishing off the match. Both players recorded identical 6-0, 6-1 decisions for the team win.

The Cardinals return Monday when they travel down I-10 to face Houston. The match against the Cougars will begin at 2 p.m.
