HOUSTON, Texas – Lamar University took victories at Nos. 1 singles and doubles and pushed two matches to a third set before Houston managed to hold on for a 6-1 victory. Despite the five-point decision, the battle on each court was a tight match.
The loss put an end to Lamar's five-match win streak.
"I'm very proud of this team today," said LU head coach
David Wong. "They showed up ready to play, and although we lost they fought to the bitter end on every court. I know the final score may not show it, but this match could've been 4-3 if a couple more breaks had gone our way. We prepare to win every week, but we can learn from this match and get better."
Houston took the doubles point but not before the duo of
Femke Tjon-A-Joe and
Margarita Roshka fended off every attack from Houston's Cortijo Parreno and Laura Slisane to record a 6-3 victory at the top spot.
As the two teams transitioned to singles, the Cardinals picked up first set wins on two different courts (1 and 5). Lamar also managed to take a second set to for a third at the No. 4 position.
Tjon-A-Joe got the Cardinals on the scoreboard with a straight-sets victory over Houston's Maria Dzemeshkevich, 6-1, 6-3. The victory trimmed the deficit down to 3-1, with Roshka and
Elena Rubio headed to a third set. Unfortunately, Big Red was unable to pick up a victory on either court as Houston closed out the day winning the five remaining matches.
The Cardinals return to action Friday when they host Nicholls. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Complex.
