TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - On two different occasions, Lamar University's softball put two runners on base with a chance to score against Troy University in the final day of the Unconquered Invitational. The Cardinals were able to put the ball into play, but the Trojans' centerfielder would make two key plays keeping LU off the scoreboard in a 2-0 Cardinal defeat.
Sam Bean, the Xayaseng sisters of Aleka and Kalyn,
Felixia Hinojosa, and
Mikaila Kenney would each tally a hit for Big Red.
Karyana Mitchell would pitch three scoreless innings striking out three Trojans before allowing two runs on four hits in her fourth inning.
Cameron Niedenthal managed to add three scoreless innings of one-hit ball on her own.
While the Cardinals were unable to get a runner into scoring position for the first four innings, but that changed in the fifth inning as both
Kalyn Xayaseng and Bean drew two out walks.
Aleka Xayaseng then singled to center hoping to drive her sister in. Unfortunately, Troy's centerfielder made a strong throw to the plate and the Cards were denied a run.
Two innings later, LU once again created a scoring threat as Kenney and Kalyn singled to bring up the winning run in Bean. While Bean did give the ball a good ride, it wasn't deep enough as the centerfielder caught the ball and ended another LU scoring chance and preserved Troy's win.
The Cardinals will fly back to Texas and get set for a quick one-game road trip against Tarleton on the first of March at 6:00 p.m.
