Freudenberg’s Three Hits & Two RBI Not Enough For Cards

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Facing off against former conference foe Tarleton State, Lamar University's softball team were able to pick up runs against the Texansn, but, they could not overcome an early deficit falling 8-4 in Stephenville.

Hayley Freudenberg was the top hitter for LU driving in two RBI on three hits, which included a double. Aleka Xayaseng and Kaylee Ancelot also recorded RBI hits for LU. Karyana Mitchell started the game and would give up four runs on five hits and went 2.2 innings. Mitchell, Fadwa Ben Karim (2.1 IP, four runs, six hits) and Aaliyah Ruiz (1.0 IP, 0 runs, 0 hits) each had a strikeout in the game. Ruiz is now five strikeouts away from breaking the school's all-time strikeout record.

Trailing 4-0 after two innings, the Cards got a run in the fourth inning with two-on and two-out, Ancelot doubled to left to score Aleka Xayaseng. However, the trail runner was out trying to score the second run in the inning for the Cardinals. The Texans extended their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

But LU chipped away a bit at the lead in the fifth when Kalyn Xayaseng doubled and Aleka Xayaseng tripled her in. Freudenberg then drove in Aleka to get the score to 7-3. While TSU was able to get another run in the bottom of their fifth, the Cardinals cut the deficit to 8-4 in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Freudenberg before the last out as recorded.

The Cardinals will get set for the Boerner Invitational in Arlington. On Friday, the Cards will open with Rider University at 10:00 a.m., before meeting with UMKCity at 12:30 p.m.
