TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Lamar University's softball team completed two games on the second day of the Unconquered Invitational down in Tallahassee. They met up with Florida Gulf Coast University in the first game and once again gave trouble to the sixth-ranked Florida State Seminoles. But even though the Cards did put the ball into play, they would fall in both contests.
Game one against FGCU saw the Eagles shutout the Cards 7-0.
Kaylee Ancelot recorded a team-best three of the four hits while
Aleka Xayaseng had the other hit.
Karyana Mitchell took the loss with 4.1 innings allowing all seven runs on 10 hits despite striking out four batters.
Cameron Niedenthal gave up one hit, but no runs in 1.2 innings of relief that included two strikeouts.
The Cardinals would later have a rematch against sixth-ranked FSU and they would do a great job of rallying back from an early deficit to be within striking distance. After falling behind 3-0, the Cards got two runs back with an RBI double from Xayaseng and an RBI single from Freudenberg. Following a fourth-inning run by FSU, Big Red would again get to within one in the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Ancelot. Ultimately, the Seminoles used seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away at 11-3.
Xayaseng finished with two hits to lead the Cardinals offensively. In the circle,
Aaliyah Ruiz pitched 2.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits to take the loss.
Fadwa Ben Karim (2.2 IP, three runs, seven hits, two Ks), Niedenthal (four runs, four hits) and
Kelsey Pizarro (one run, one hit) would also have appearances in the circle.
LU's final game of this tournament will be against Troy University at 10:00 a.m., (9:00 a.m. central time) tomorrow morning.
