BEAUMONT, Texas – Sophomore
Max Amling recorded wins at No. 1 singles and doubles, but Lamar University fell to Rice, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center. The Cardinals (7-6) had three sets go to a tiebreaker in singles action but managed just one point from those three courts.
After the Owls took the opening match of the day, LU fought back with a victory at No. 1 doubles. The duo of Amling and senior
Filippo Salsini knocked off Rice's Trinity Grear and Wes Barnett, 6-3, but the visitors closed the doubles competition by taking the last match.
The Owls held the momentum transitioning to singles picking up wins in the first three courts to finish. Amling finally stopped the run with his victory at No. 1 singles. He defeated Rice's Grear, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, but the overall team outcome had already been decided.
The Cardinals return to action Thursday when they travel to College Station to take on Texas A&M. The match against the Aggies is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
