Cardinals Defeat Former Conference Foe

\NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the second consecutive match, Lamar University had to rally from a 1-0 deficit and scored the deciding point in a three-set decision, but Friday's opponent was former Southland Conference foe Stephen F. Austin. The Cardinals recorded a 4-3 victory over SFA at the Schlief Tennis Center.

Similar to the match against Southern Mississippi, the Cardinals found themselves down a point following the transition to singles play. Things also didn't start positively for the Cardinals in singles. After dropping a point at line two, LU had its back against the wall looking to slow the Ladyjacks momentum. Not only would Big Red slow the momentum but they flipped it completely around in the form of juniors Ana Jolic and Elena Rubio.

Jolic got the Cardinals on the scoreboard with a straight-sets victory over Jemma Cave, 7-5, 6-4. After trimming the deficit in half, Rubio went about the task of tying the match and she did so in two very tough sets defeating the 'Jacks' Felicia Back, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

The next three matches were all headed to a third set, but it would be freshman Megan Do who would be the next to finish. The Nederland, Texas native recorded a 6-0 decision in the first set but then the match tightened. SFA's Carolina Chiatti battled back to take the second. In the end Do prevailed, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 to give the Cardinals a 3-0 run and their first lead of the day.

Senior Femke Tjon-A-Joe took the cue from her teammate and put the match away. After dropping her opening set, Tjon-A-Joe battled back with a vengeance taking the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0.

The Cardinals will open a three-match homestand Saturday, Mar. 1 when they host Dillard University. The match will begin at 11 a.m. from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Complex.
