Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Looking to end their I-35 tournament with a positive note, Lamar University's softball team once again found themselves in an offensive slugfest against UTSA. Once again, the Cardinals had a four run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning and stood one out away from the win and this time, they finished the job. Holding on to an 11-7 win against the Roadrunners, the Cardinals end their tournament 2-3.
There were three homers hit in this game as Sam Bean, who led all Cards with three hits, got her fourth homer of the year while Kaylee Ancelot and Hayley Freudenberg also got their first homers of the season. Freudenberg managed to collect five RBI on two hits while Ancelot and Audry Fleming (two hits) each had two RBI. Making her first start of the season, Cameron Niedenthal went the distance striking out six batters and walking five along the way.
UTSA got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out, two-run single for an early 2-0 advantage. But the Cardinals answered back with four runs in the third inning thanks to two-run homers by Bean and Ancelot. Their 4-2 lead was short-lived as the Roadrunners answered back with two to tie the game after three.
Undaunted, LU responded with a second straight four-run inning in the fourth. This time, it was on two-RBI knocks by Freudenberg (double) and Fleming (single) bringing LU's lead to 8-4 although UTSA would scratch a run across in their fourth-inning. Following a scoreless fifth, the Cardinals received another big blast and it was Freudenberg who delivered a three-run bomb to double LU's lead. Two Roadrunner runs in the bottom of the sixth made it 11-7. But, Big Red never forgot the last meeting between the two teams and were able to hold down any potential comebacks to preserve the win.
LU will continue their road trip as they will head to Nacogdoches this coming Tuesday to meet with Stephen F. Austin for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
