Men’s Tennis Takes Doubleheader from Braves

BEAUMONT, Texas – Sophomore Max Amling recorded four victories (two singles and two doubles) to lead Lamar University to a doubleheader sweep over Alcorn State Friday at the Thompson Family Tennis Complex. The Cardinals defeated Alcorn State, 5-2, in the first match and bounced back to record a 4-0 decision in the second.

The Cardinals are now 6-4 (.600) on the season and have won three straight and four of the last five.

Big Red jumped out to early leads in both matches and never looked back scoring the clinching point in both contests before Alcorn was able to get on the board.

The Cardinals took the doubles point in the opening match. Despite the fact that Big Red won the first two matches to finish to secure the point before the third match was completed, the two teams played out the final doubles match.

The Cardinals quickly made it a 3-0 decision in the transition to singles after Amling and junior Brandon Do gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Amling bounced Alcorn's Dakota Fernandez, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot, while Do defeated ASU's Isaac Santitto, 6-2, 6-0, in straight sets.

The Cardinals were on the verge of an opening match victory needing just one more win on the four remaining courts. Big Red didn't have to wait long to get that victory as freshman Max Milic put the match away with a straight-sets victory at No. 6.

The Braves scored two points late in the match, but it was after the overall outcome had been decided.

It was a similar story in the second contest as LU won the doubles point, but this time the Cards took all three courts. Senior Filippo Salsini gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with a dominating performance at No. 1 singles. Salsini defeated Dakota Fernandez, 6-0, 6-1. The Red and White never looked back quickly scoring the next two points to put the match away. The match was halted when LU scored the deciding point.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to take on LSU. The match against the Tigers will begin at noon.
