BATON ROUGE, La. – Lamar University stepped on the court Sunday afternoon to face one of the top teams in the nation in the LSU Tigers, but the hometown team had too much firepower knocking off Big Red, 7-0.
LSU entered the match with a singles player ranked in the top 30 in the nation to go along with a top 25 doubles team. The Cardinals (6-5) duo of
Max Milic and
Haruki Omori-Cowie gave LSU's nationally-ranked tandem all it could handle. The 22
nd-ranked pairing of Stefan Latinovic and Nick Watson gained an advantage late but couldn't finish the match out as it was halted due to LSU picking up the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3.
Freshman
Max Milic put up a strong fight at No. 4 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-2, he battled right back in the second for a 6-3 decision, forcing a super tiebreak. The final frame was a back-and-forth affair that saw LSU's Welsh Hotard take a 10-8 decision for the victory.
That was the only court that went to a third set as the Tigers picked up victories on the remaining courts.
The Cardinals return to action Monday, Feb. 20 when they host Southern Mississippi. The match against the Golden Eagles will begin at 11 a.m. from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Courts.
