BEAUMONT, Texas – Fresh off their impressive victory over UTSA, the Lamar University Cardinals (2-1) look to make it two in a row Saturday when they travel west to face the University of the Pacific. Saturday's contest against the Tigers will tip off at 2 p.m. (4 p.m. Beaumont time) from the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton.
While the Cardinals are going in search of their second-straight win, and three of four, to start the season, Pacific is on the flip side of the coin trying not to drop consecutive games and three of four to open the year. The Tigers are 1-2 after opening the season with a seven-point setback to Sam Houston but bounced just four days later with an eight-point win at California. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they were never able to find their rhythm Wednesday at Nevada being held to a season-low 39 points in an 88-39 loss.
As a team, the Tigers are averaging 61 points per game while shooting 37 percent from the field, but only 28 percent (21-of-75) from three-point range. They have also struggled at the free throw line converting just 64 percent of their attempts in the early going. The Tigers have also been outrebounded by 10 boards per night during the early part of the season.
Big Red's offense has been firing on all cylinders through the first three games averaging better than 90 points per game. The Cardinals currently have five players averaging in double figures led by,
B.B. Knight's 14.3 points per game – who is also knocking down threes at a 40-percent clip.
Lamar is shooting the ball at 41 percent during the early going, which includes an impressive 29-of-80 (.363) effort on three balls. The Cardinals also lead the league converting nearly 84 percent of their free throws. LU is also pulling down better than 50 rebounds per game this season.
The Cardinals head to Stockton, Calif., looking to right the ship in a series that has only had three previous meetings but all three have gone in favor of the Tigers, including a nine-point setback last season in Beaumont. This will be the Cardinals first game in Stockton, Calif., since November of 2002.
Saturday's contest will be streamed live on ESPN+.
