BEAUMONT, Texas – Despite 15 kills from freshman Lyric Jordan and a career-high 18 digs from Jo Moffitt, Lamar came up just short against Incarnate Word in thrilling fashion, 3-1 (24-26, 30-28, 25-23, 25-10), Thursday evening at McDonald Gym.
Lamar (1-20/1-9 SLC) finished the evening 46-21-143(.175) from the floor. They also recorded nine blocks to go with three aces.
Incarnate Word ended the match with an attack rate of .257 (59-21-148) while overcoming 13 service errors with eight aces.
The first set saw each team alternate runs as Lamar jumped out to an early lead with Incarnate Word rallying late. Ultimately, eight attack errors cost the visitors as Lamar held on to take the set behind six kills from Lyric Jordan.
A similar style played out in the second set with timeouts from both teams turning into huge momentum swings. A late successful challenge from Incarnate Word kept the set going as they went on to tie things up.
A back-and-forth affair in the third set saw nine lead changes and eighteen tied scores. Lamar held a lead late but saw Incarnate Word come back and score four of the last five points.
The fourth set was a different story as Incarnate Word came out of the gate strong and jumped out to a lead that they would not relinquish on their way to a four-set victory.
Lamar is back in action Saturday afternoon when they host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at McDonald Gym at 1 p.m.
