Hoops Participates in Uganda Food Project

BEAUMONT, Texas – Although the start of the basketball season is still a couple months away, the Lamar University men's basketball team has been busy not only getting ready for the season, but also helping their fellow man.

The Cardinals spent part of Saturday at St. Anne Church and School helping package approximately 271,000 freeze-dried meals which will be sent to more than 700 school children in Uganda. The meals are expected to feed children for the rest of the year.

"I saw a flyer at church about the Kids Around the World organization and their work trying to send food to Uganda because of the food shortage," said LU head coach Alvin Brooks. "After hearing more about it I realized this is something that would be good for our team to be part of. I got with our assistant coaches and we were able to make some calls and set it up where we could spend Saturday at St. Anne's."

The Cardinals arrived at St. Anne's before 8 a.m. Saturday morning and before their shift came to an end it was announced that more than 25,000 pounds of food had been packaged.

"This was a really well-organized event," said Brooks. "We took our players, coaches and managers Saturday and they divided us up among several different stations and we went to work shortly after we arrived. The program ran like a well-oiled machine and I'm thankful they allowed us to be apart of it."

Kids Around the World is a faith-based, non-profit organization that seeks to impact the lives of children through playground projects, meal packing events and KIDStory – passing along God's transforming hope through Bible stories.
