The Storyline
The Cardinals enter the 2022 season with seven returning starters on the offensive side of the ball, including
Jeremy Davis at tight end. The tight ends will be a strength for the Cardinals in 2022. Even beyond Davis, this is a very deep and talented position group for the Cardinals. Davis (6-5, 253) has been with LU since head coach
Blane Morgan took over the program. A transfer from Missouri Southern State, Davis took over the starting role during the 2020 COVID season and never looked back. Over the course of his career, Davis has played in 17 games earning 14 starts and has hauled in 13 passes for 132 yards with a touchdown.
Fortunately for the Red and White, Davis isn't the only player the coaching staff can turn to for leadership. Senior
Nathan Gaskamp has also been with the Cardinals since Coach Morgan's arrival in the Golden Triangle. A versatile athlete, Gaskamp can be utilized out of the backfield but also has the ability to break a long play as a receiver (his lone reception of 2021 went for 80 yards and a score). While both Davis and Gaskamp are weapons with the ball in their hands, they both also bring the added asset of being strong blockers.
In addition to the previous mentioned duo, Big Red also returns sophomores
Devyn Gibbs and
Sterling Herrington who combined to play in 14 games last season. Those two, to go along with newcomers
Spencer Henslee (6-4, 222) and
Jace Washington (6-5, 220), provide the coaching staff with plenty of options, depth and varying skills sets at the position.
