Cardinals Close Homestand with Southern University

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University will step on the field Tuesday to close out its current four-game homestand with a rematch against Southern University. Tuesday's game will serve as the Cardinals' (29-19) final non-conference contest of the season, and one of seven remaining games on the 2022 regular-season docket.

Currently tied for second in the Western Athletic Conference's Southwest Division (14-10), Big Red will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing homestand over the weekend that saw it drop two of three to UT Rio Grande Valley. Despite the series loss – only the Cardinals third series loss of the season – the Cardinals have won six of the previous nine decisions.

One of the top teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Southern comes to the Golden Triangle with an 18-27 (.400) overall record and a 15-9 (.630) mark in SWAC contests. The Jaguars have turned a corner since the two schools met last week. Southern swept its conference weekend series over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, putting up 39 runs in the three games, and enters Tuesday's contest having won four of its previous five.

The Cardinals are 11-1 (.917) all-time against Southern, a mark that includes a 15-5 run-rule victory in Baton Rouge last week. Big Red is 6-1 (.857) all-time against Southern in Beaumont with the lone setback at home, and in the series, coming during the 1982 season. The series dates back to the 1977 season.

Prior to last week's contest, the three prior meetings came right down to the wire with the outcome being decided by two runs or less. If history is any indicator of how Tuesday's game will go, the Cardinals offense will be looking to plate six runs as LU has held Southern to five runs in each of the three previous meetings.

Tuesday's game is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch from Vincent-Beck Stadium. The game will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network.
