BEAUMONT, Texas – As the 2021-22 academic year winds down, the Lamar University student-athletes, coaches and administrators gathered at McDonald Gym Monday evening for the 2022 Cardinal Choice Awards – an event to highlight and celebrate the achievements of the student-athletes for the year.
Below is a list of the 2021-22 award winners:
Comeback Player of the Year – Bebe Galloway, Women's Basketball
Team GPA Award – Men's Cross Country
Red Cup Award (Community Service) – Softball
Female Individual Performance of the Year – Nicole Panis, Soccer
Male Individual Performance of the Year – Jack Dallas, Baseball
Female Freshman of the Year – Akasha Davis, Basketball
Male Freshman of the Year – Daniel Sancho Arbizu, Men's Tennis
Female Newcomer of the Year – Sam Bean, Softball
Female Iron Cardinal Award – Angel Hastings, Basketball
Male Iron Cardinal Award – Steven Jones, Football and Track & Field
Male Newcomer of the Year – Adam Wheaton, Baseball
Best Moment of the Year –
Matthew McDonald, Baseball
Best Team Performance – Men's Tennis
Babe Didrikson Zaharias Award – Yasmin Austridge, Women's Cross Country and Track & Field
Mary Gray Presidential Award – Hayleigh Moreno, Volleyball
John Gray Presidential Award – Ayaan Sohail, Men's Basketball
Female Student-Athlete of the Year – Parl Eelma, Track & Field
Male Student-Athlete of the Year – George Wheeler, Cross Country and Track & Field
In addition to the individual awards handed out, LU also recognized all of its All-WAC and Academic All-WAC honorees to go along with all of the four-year seniors.
Despite the fact LU held its annual awards banquet Monday evening, several sports are still in the heart of their conference season including softball and baseball, while the men's and women's outdoor track and field team will be heading the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Seattle later this month.
