Cardinals Prepare to Face Southern

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Winners in five of the last seven, the Lamar University baseball team heads to Baton Rouge, La., Tuesday evening to take on Southern. The Cardinals head east looking to close out the current four-game road swing with a winning record after taking two of three from Sam Houston over the weekend.

Big Red closed out a four-game homestand by taking two of three from Stephen F. Austin and defeating Houston, 4-1, in a midweek game. Big Red (27-17/13-8 WAC) kept that momentum rolling forward over the weekend when they took the first two games of the series at Sam Houston, including rallying from a 5-0 first-inning deficit in game one. When the Cardinals – who are 7-4 in their last 11 games – return to Western Athletic Conference play Friday they sit just a game back of Sam Houston for the WAC Southwest Division lead.

Southern enters the week with an under .500 record on the season, but they are three games over in SWAC contests. The Jaguars roll into Beaumont having won two of three from Grambling State in a series where their bats came to life scoring 7, 6 and 14 runs respectively.

Tuesday's contest will be the first of two meetings between the two over the course of the next five games. Tuesday's meeting will be the 12th time the two schools have met on the diamond, in a series that dates back to 1977. The Cardinals own a 10-1 (.909) all-time series record, which includes a 6-1 (.857) record in Beaumont. The lone home loss came during the 1982 season. The Cardinals have won the previous seven meetings including a 7-5 extra inning affair in Baton Rouge last season.

Tuesday's game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Lee-Hines Stadium in Baton Rouge.
