Cardinals Have Strong Showings at SFA and Mississippi

OXFORD, Miss. - Running in the John Walker Invitational, four Cardinals athletes were able to test themselves against some tough competition. In the end, LU came away with three top 10 finishes on the day.
 
Yasmin Austridge recorded the best finish out of all Cardinals when she took fourth place in the 3000-meter steeplechase clocking in at 10:14.93 seconds. In the men's version, Declan Neary took seventh place at 9:13.90, but finished ahead of three runners from Kentucky. George Wheeler and Eli Peveto both competed in the men's 5000-meter event. While Peveto finished 29th at 14:52.51, Wheeler claimed a fifth place finish at 14:14.56, which was .50 seconds behind fourth and only two runners from Auburn and the winner from Vanderbilt did better.
 
Meanwhile, at the Carl Kight Invitational hosted by Stephen F. Austin, Parl Eelma partook in the seven-event heptathlon. With 4892 points, Eelma was third place overall. She started with a second place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.33), followed by a tie for sixth in the high jump (1.51m) and ninth in the shot put (9.84m). After finishing fifth in the 200m dash (26.23), Eelma claimed first in both the long jump (5.65m) and the javelin throw (36.49m). Her 800-meter event saw her take fourth at 2:30.39 seconds.

The Cardinals will return to Nacogdoches next weekend for their next meet.
