BEAUMONT, Texas – For the second time this season Lamar University and Houston will be squaring off on the diamond, with the one difference being the venue. The first meeting came nearly two months ago when the Cougars rallied late for a one-run victory.
Despite the heartbreaking outcome, the game came during a 12-game span that saw Big Red win nine games. All three losses during that stretch were road contests and two of them were games that saw the home team score late runs to escape with a victory.
The Cardinals enter the week with a 24-16 (.600) overall record and currently in the hunt for the WAC Southwest Division title. The Cardinals are coming off a weekend series that saw them win two of three, marking the seventh series that LU has won this season. The Cardinals took two of three from SFA over the weekend and five of six for the season.
Houston makes their way to the Golden Triangle with an almost identical record (26-14) and has won four of their last five games, including two of three against Memphis. The last time the two schools met in Beaumont the Cardinals got the upper hand. After having their first seven games of the 2021 season canceled due to COVID, the Cardinals opened last year against Houston on Mar. 3
rd. At the time, Houston came in as the nation's leader in home runs, but the LU pitching staff recorded a shutout and the Cardinals picked up a 2-0 decision.
The Cardinals trail the all-time series between the two schools, 30-55 (.353), a mark that includes a 16-21 (.432) record in Beaumont. While the two schools have split the last two meetings (which each team winning on its home field), the Cougars have had the upper hand lately winning five of the last six. Prior to that the Cardinals had won four of the previous five and six of eight. The series between the two dates back to the 1952 season.
Tuesday's game will begin at 6 p.m. from Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals are an impressive 13-6 (.684) at home in 2022. The game will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network.
