Big Red Heads Back to the Bayou City

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – For the third time in the first 13 games, the Lamar University baseball team will be making the short trip down I-10 to Houston to face an opponent. Big Red squares off against Houston Baptist Wednesday afternoon for their final tune-up before for the start of Western Athletic Conference play.

The Cardinals' previous two trips to the Bayou City have yielded a 2-2 (.500) record, which arguably could be a 4-0 record had it not been for a late inning rally by Rice (in the third game of the series) and Houston.

The Cardinals (8-4) will be facing their former conference foes with momentum on their side. LU swept a four-game home series against Mount St. Mary's last week. The Cardinals outscored The Mount, 36-10, with three of the four games falling into the blowout category (the first game of the series was decided by one run). In addition to the offense being put on display, the Cardinals' pitching staff recorded a shutout Sunday and finished off the first game of a Saturday doubleheader allowing just one run.

The Huskies enter the week 5-8 (.385) on the season and were slated to take on Prairie View Tuesday but Mother Nature had other plans. Despite the Huskies' under-.500 record, the Huskies are riding a wave of momentum as well. HBU opened the month of March by traveling to Sacramento, Calif., and taking three of four from No. 23 Sacramento State. Prior to running into the Huskies, Sacramento State swept a three-game series at No. 6 Long Beach State – with all three games being one-run affairs.

The all-time history between the two schools is one that favors LU with a 32-21 (.627) overall record. The Red and White have won consecutive games in the series and six of the last seven dating back to the 2018 season. The Cards have also had good success in Houston against the Huskies boasting of a 13-7 (.650) record.

Tuesday's game is slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch from Husky Field and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
