BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University outscored Prairie View A&M, 12-1, Wednesday afternoon to take both ends of a doubleheader. Big Red won both matches by the same score, 6-1, despite the fact the two teams altered their lineups for the second match.
The Cardinals (9-8) used the same formula to take both matches – win the doubles points, extend the lead early in singles, and never allow Prairie View to make and extended run.
After taking the doubles point in the opening match, freshman
Noelia Lorca gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with her victory on court No. 3 in straight sets. LU then turned to Lou DuPuis. The native of Martigues, France, never allow PVAMU's Salma Sanchez a chance to get in the match posting consecutive 6-1 scores to win in straight sets. It was one of two singles wins for DuPuis on the day.
The Cardinals would go on to lock up the overall team victory before PVAMU would get on the scoreboard.
The two schools returned to the court at 2 p.m. for the second half of the doubleheader, which shaped up to be oddly similar to the first match. The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead, and this time it was sophomore
Elena Rubio who put the second point on the scoreboard. She defeated Sanchez 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, before classmate
Ana Jolic came through with a straight-sets decision on court No. 2 to build an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
The Panthers managed to put a point on the board at No. 1 singles before the Cardinals closed out the day by taking the final three matches.
LU returns to conference play Saturday, April 2
nd, when they host Abilene Christian. The match against ACU will be played at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
