Cardinals Defeat Oral Roberts

BEAUMONT, Texas – The weather recently has taken its toll on Lamar University's opponents making it tough for them to get to Beaumont. After a weekend that was supposed to see three matches for the Cardinals, the Red and White finally got back on the court Sunday morning to host Oral Roberts in a doubleheader with the LU women's team. Big Red waisted little time recording a 5-2 victory over the Golden Eagles.

In a matchup between two teams with rosters dominated by freshmen, it was the Cardinals who jumped out to the early advantage. The Cardinals took victories on courts one and three to win the doubles point. Among the four Cardinals on those two courts, three were freshmen. The Golden Eagles managed a win on court two, but it was close (7-5) and the point had already been decided.

The Cardinals didn't let up after the doubles point but began to apply the pressure to open singles play. Another rookie, Max Amling, recorded a quick victory with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the No. 4 spot to give LU a 2-0 lead. Moments later, classmate Martin Garcia-Ripoll handed the Cardinals a three-point lead with his equally impressive victory on court 6 (6-2, 6-1 vs. Eli Brewer).

With their backs against the wall, ORU responded with a victory at the No. 1 position, but it wasn't enough to start a rally. LU sophomore, and Nederland, Texas native, Brandon Do, posted a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Oral Roberts' Aaron Brewer at the No. 5 position to secure the team victory.

The two teams split the decisions on the two remaining courts with freshman Juan Jose Rodriguez posting a victory at No. 2 singles.

The Cardinals return to action Friday when they host Tyler Junior College. The match against TJC will begin at 11 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
