BEAUMONT, Texas - The Cardinals hoped to pay tribute to
Anyssia Gibbs,
Angel Hastings, and Michaela Wilson on Senior Day with a win. Instead, despite a late rally, Lamar Unviersity ran out of time as they fell 67-64 to Tarleton.
Angel Hastings tallied a season-high 19 points to lead the Cardinals. This included tying a season high with four three-pointers.
Akasha Davis tallied 13 points and recorded two blocks while
Malay McQueen picked up 10 points for herself. The Cardinals ended up shooting 44.2% from the field.
Â
Trailing 6-2 early in the first, LU would be sparked by a Wilson three-point play to go up 9-8 following a 7-2 run. Once again, the TexAnns got themselves back in front putting five straight points on the board. But with
Malay McQueen and
Emma Imevbore recording a pair of baskets, LU saw a 16-15 lead in a quarter they shot 58.3% in.
Â
Sabria Dean netted five early points in the second quarter to put the Cardinals up 21-17. But over the final six minutes, TSU took command with a 15-4 run to be up 32-25 at the break. Imevbore added her fourth point while Hastings got on the board with free throws. LU shot just 25% in the quarter.
Â
LU tried to get themselves back into the contest as a three by Hastings and a free throw by Davis brought the score to 34-29 in TSU's favor. However, the TexAnns kept control of the game as they upped their lead to as much as 12 points (44-32). The Cardinals ended the third with four straight points trailing 44-36.
Â
Following a TexAnn three to start the fourth, the Cardinals would put together a series of surges. Back-to-back threes by Hastings and a layup by Davis cut the deficit to 48-44. The rest of the quarter would be a repeat as TSU would increase their lead only for LU to come close. The Cardinals wound up with 28 points with Hastings being in takeover mode scoring 17 of them.
Â
Davis would pitch in eight points in the quarter as the Cardinals made it a single possession game multiple times. Each time, the TexAnns would increase that margin until the final seconds. Once the Cardinals made the score 67-64, there was little to no time for a chance to tie despite LU's best effort.
Â
The Cardinals will host Abilene Christian for their final home game at 6:30 PM on Monday night. The game is a make up from the originally scheduled Thursday night game which had to be postponed.
