BEAUMONT, Texas – Senior
C.J. Roberts scored a team-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough to slow down Stephen F. Austin's low post presence as the Lumberjacks pulled away late for a 70-56 victory at the Montagne Center.
Roberts was one of two Cardinals to score in double figures for an offense that shot better than 50 percent on the afternoon. Big Red converted 24-of-47 attempts (.511). Roberts was joined in double figures by 10 points from
Avontez Ledet and
Corey Nickerson.
Unfortunately for the Red and White, the 51 percent effort was not enough to overcome 25 turnovers (which led to 26 points).
SFA was led by 20 points from Gavin Kensmil. The Lumberjacks finished the night 28-of-61 (.459), but just two of their field goals were three pointers. SFA did most of their damage in the low post scoring 48 points in the paint. The 'Jacks also held a 38-26 advantage on the glass.
After falling behind by eight points early in the second half, the Cardinals put on a surge battling back to take a one-point lead, 42-41, with 11:24 remaining. The Cardinals' run was capped with a Nickerson' basket in the paint. Unfortunately, SFA responded with a 12-2 run to claim a nine-point advantage.
SFA managed to keep the lead at eight points until late in the game when SFA hit their free throws late to push their lead to the final margin.
