Slow Start Hurts LU in Abilene

ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Christian opened the game on a 14-1 run and never looked back defeating Lamar University, 77-42, Thursday evening at the Teague Center.
 
The Cardinals (2-24/0-15 WAC) never managed to find their rhythm offensively shooting just 12-of-40 (.300) from the field, and turning the ball over 38 times (which led to 41 ACU points). LU managed just four of their 12 field goals game's opening 20 minutes. The two teams finished the night tied in rebounds, 34-34.
 
Sophomore Corey Nickerson led the Cardinals offensively with 11 point.
 
After a hot start, the Wildcats cooled off in the later stages of the opening half, and into the second half but the damage had already been done. ACU finished the night 26-of-65 (.400) from the field, including nine three-pointers.
 
After opening the game on a 14-1 run, ACU pushed its advantage to 22-1 before the Cardinals managed to knock down their first field goal – a C.J. Roberts' three-pointer with – with 9:58 remaining in the half. The Wildcats converted six of their first 10 attempts as they closed the opening half knocking down 17-of-36 (.472) attempts, including six three-point field goals.
 
ACU's opening-game run was aided by 11 Cardinal turnovers in the game's first 7:30, and the Cardinals finished the half with 22 miscues which led to 26 points.
 
The Cardinals finished the opening half shooting 4-of-14 (.286) from the field, led by seven points Nickerson. The two teams went into the locker room tied in the rebound column.
 
Unfortunately, things didn't get much better for the Cards in the second. Abilene Christian opened the final 20 minutes on a 15-8 and LU never got back within striking distance.
 
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they travel to Stephenville, Texas to take on Tarleton State. The game against the Texas will tip off at 7 p.m. from Wisdom Gym.
