HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lamar University swept all three doubles matches to take the first lead of the day and that turned out to be the difference in the match as the two schools split the singles competition. Lamar University picked up a hard fought 4-3 victory on the road.
The win – LU's sixth consecutive – moved the Red and White to 7-3 on the young season. The Cardinals were unable to hold on to their momentum from doubles play as Southern Miss answered back with a victory on court No. 5 to tie the match. LU regained the lead when
Martin Garcia-Ripoll posted a straight-sets victory over USM's Christopher Cahour at line 6 singles.
After Garcia-Ripoll's victory to reclaim the lead, the Cardinals never looked back. LU rattled off straight-set wins at the Nos. 2 and 1 positions, respectively, to lock up the overall win. Southern Miss answered back with the last two matches but it was too little too late.
The Cardinals will go in search of their seventh consecutive victory Saturday when they take on UAB. The match against the Dragons will begin at 11 a.m. from Hattiesburg.
