HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lamar University men's tennis recorded its sixth-straight victory Saturday afternoon with an impressive 5-2 decision at UAB. The win moves the Cardinals to 7-3 on the season.
After recording identical 6-4 scores at courts 2 and 3 doubles, to take an early advantage in doubles, the Cardinals managed to carry that momentum over to singles. Big Red got straight set decisions from
Max Amling and
Juan Jose Rodriguez to build a comfortable 3-0 lead.
UAB managed to make the match interesting when they rallied to trim the deficit down to a single point with victories at the Nos. 4 and 5 spots. The Blazers slight run had very little impact as the Cardinals closed the day by taking the final two matches. The deciding victory came from
Daniel Sancho Arbizu at No. 1 singles. The Cardinals' freshman defeated UAB's Michael Lusovsky, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, for the overall decision. Classmate
Martin Garcia-Ripoll closed out the day with a win on court 6.
The Cardinals return to action Thursday when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on UIW. The match against the other Cardinals will begin at 11 a.m.
