PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico -- Lamar University fell 5-2 against Long Beach State Sunday morning, closing out the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.

The Cardinals plated the game's first two runs in the top of the fourth inning when senior outfielder Aleka Xayaseng and freshman outfielder Piper Hankins scored on an error committed by Long Beach State.

The lead would not last long as Long Beach State answered with three runs in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth. Big Red had an opportunity in the seventh with the tying run at the plate and runners at the corners. Long Beach State was able to hold off the potential rally with a line out to left field.

The Cardinals now come home to host the Cardinal Classic Feb. 18-20 at the LU Softball Complex. Lamar University will play a doubleheader Friday night against Creighton and New Mexico. First pitch for the game against Creighton is scheduled for 3 p.m.
