BEAUMONT, Texas – On a day that was slowed by rain in the area, the Lamar University women's team didn't allow the weather to dampen their effort sweeping a doubleheader from Alcorn State Saturday afternoon at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center. The Cardinals took the opening match, 7-0, and came right back to claim the second, 5-1.
The Cardinals wasted little time in the opening match. LU took all three doubles matches to claim the first lead of the afternoon – a lead they would not surrender. After seizing the opening momentum, LU went for the knock out punch as sophomore
Ana Jolic gave the Cardinals a two-point advantage from the No. 3 position.
Freshman
Elena Rubio posted a quick 6-1, 6-0 decision over Tangia Riley-Codring to give the Cardinals an insurmountable 3-0 lead. LU rattled off wins on the final four courts for the shutout. About the only thing that didn't go LU's way in the opening match was the weather as rains in the area delayed the match more than an hour.
It was more of the same for the Cardinals in the second match. After winning the doubles point, the Cardinals took victories on courts 2 and 3, to build a big lead. The Cardinals closed out the day with two more singles wins before Alcorn State picked up their first and only point of the day.
Big Red will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Lafayette, La., to face the Ragin' Cajuns. The match against UL Lafayette will begin at 2:30 p.m.
