BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University was impressive Saturday afternoon sweeping Alcorn State winning both matches by a combined 12-0 score. The Cardinals took the first match, 7-0, and came right back in the second to post a 5-0 decision.
After taking a 1-0 lead from doubles into singles, the Cardinals used the bottom half of their lineup to put the first match away. Beginning with senior
Joshua Taylor's straight-sets decision on court No. 6, the Cardinals followed with quick two setters from newcomers
Martin Garcia-Ripoll and
Arthur Bugeaud on courts 5 and 4, respectively.
Although LU would win the final three remaining matches, the clincher came from freshman
Max Amling on court 2. He defeated ASU's Luka Rodic, 6-0, 6-2.
The second match was almost a mirror image of the first. After winning the doubles points, the Cardinals wasted little time building a big lead on the singles court. The Cardinals won the opening set on four of the six singles courts and held those matches on every court. Freshman
Martin Garcia-Ripoll gave LU its first singles win in the second match, while classmate Haruki-Omori-Cowie finished off the day with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Dakota Fernandez on court 5.
The Cardinals return to action Friday when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on Southern Miss. The match against the Golden Eagles will begin at 11 a.m.
