SAN ANTONIO, Texas – After a highly contested doubles point, Lamar University wasted little time putting away future conference foe, UIW, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Complex in San Antonio.
 
After UIW was forced to forfeit the match on court No. 3, things became very tough on the other two courts. The sophomore duo of Elena Rodriguez and Alba Perez posted a thrilling, 7-5, victory over UIW's Taylor Parkinson and Sofia Franco Salcedo on court No. 2. The victory was key as the other Cardinals would pick up a victory in a tiebreak at line 1.
 
Unlike their victory over Oral Roberts, the Cardinals didn't waste their momentum coming out of doubles. Big Red picked up first set victories on all but one court, and the good guys managed to hold onto those leads for the victory.
 
With a 2-0 advantage, freshman Noelia Lorca put the Cardinals on the verge of a team win with her straight-sets victory over Taylor Parkinson, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4. Moments later, Rodriguez put the match away with her straight-sets victory at the No. 2 spot. The Cardinals closed out the day with two more victories as UIW could manage only one win on the afternoon.
 
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they host Alcorn State in a doubleheader. The first match against the Lady Braves will begin at 9 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center, with the second to follow at 2 p.m.
