LU Faces Tough LSU Squad

BATON ROUGE, La. - Facing their second straight Southeastern Conference opponent, the Lamar Cardinals looked to test themselves against LSU by giving the 11th ranked Tigers a tough challenge. However, the Tigers would capitalize on LU turnovers and shoot over 50% from the field to hand the Cardinals a loss. The Cardinals are now 4-5 on the season.

Sabria Dean (15 points) and Portia Adams (14 points) combined for 29 points to lead LU. Adams was also two rebounds shy of a double-double. The Cardinals would make just 30.2% from the field all game long.

NJ Weems and Adams gave LU the early 4-0 lead to open the game. For much of the quarter, the Cardinals kept the lead as Dean put up nine points on four-of-five shooting from the field. Yet, up 13-9, the Big Red would concede an 8-2 run to trail 17-15 in the first quarter that saw both teams shot over 40% from the field.

The second quarter began with LU picked up an early Dean free throw and a Taylor jumper to trail 19-18. The game took a turn in the second quarter as LSU went on a 22-0 run to stretch their lead to 41-18. Dean would stop the run with a three-pointer, but with 16.7% made from the field, the Cardinals trailed 43-21.

The third quarter would see LU put up 13 points on four-of-13 shooting. LSU started with an 11-2 run while the Cardinals would get a pair of baskets by Adams and Akasha Davis. Dean picked up her 15th point of the contest in the 3:01 mark. But, the Tigers would tally 28 points to put themselves up 71-34.

LU scored just eight points in the fourth quarter. Following an Adams made basket, LSU went on a 15-0 run. Another four Adams points plus a Alyiah Craft layup brought the final score to 88-42 in the Tigers' favor.

The Cardinals return home to the Montagne Center this Saturday to take on Louisiana at 2:00 p.m.
