BEAUMONT, Texas – As three members of the Lamar University volleyball team prepare for the final home match of their careers, the Cardinals look to end the season on a positive note. The Cardinals will close out the 2022 regular season with a senior night matchup against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Thursday) followed by the renewing of the annual Battle of the Border at McNeese Saturday.
The Cardinals (9-18/3-13 SLC) step on the court Thursday for their final home match of the season looking for their second win in their previous three outings. Big Red enters the week currently 10
th in the league standings just a win back of Nicholls, but the Colonels own the tiebreak against Big Red.
A&M-Corpus Christi (11-19/11-5 SLC) is currently tied for third in the standings. After a rough start to the season, 0-14, the Islanders have turned things around in conference play with all 11 of their victories coming during the conference portion of the season. A&M-Corpus Christi has won four of the previous five matches with the lone setback during that stretch coming against Houston Christian last time out.
The Cardinals will be looking to prevent the season series sweep when they step on the floor Thursday, in addition to putting an end to a 15-match skid to A&M-Corpus Christi. The Cardinals trail the all-time series, 13-17 (.433), to Corpus Christi and haven't defeated the Islanders since a 3-1 decision in 2011.
The match against the Islanders is slated for a 6 p.m. start from McDonald Gym. Prior to the match, the Cardinals will be honoring their three seniors –
Giselle Santini,
Amber Johnson and
Sam Swayze.
LU will then hit the road two days later to close the regular season against McNeese. The match against the Cowgirls will begin at 1 p.m. McNeese is currently fighting for a shot at the SLC regular season title. Currently tied with Houston Christian at 12-4 (.750) on the season, the Cowgirls have won eight of their previous nine matches with the lone loss during that stretch coming at A&M-Corpus Christi on Nov. 3.
The Cardinals lead the all-time Battle of the Border series, 46-32 (.590), but have struggled on the road (20-24/.455). LU will be looking to put an end to a three-match slide against the Cowgirls.
