DENTON, Texas – Lamar University dropped a 7-0 decision at North Texas Sunday afternoon in a match that was closer than the final score would indicate. The loss drops LU to 0-2 on the young season.
"The final result is very disappointing because we played much better than the finals score reflects," said LU head coach
David Wong. "We had our chances to win the doubles point, and on some singles courts, but just didn't get the job done. It's unfortunate, but we will learn from this and get better."
The Cardinals dropped the doubles point but the freshmen tandem of
Noelia Lorca and
Elena Tairyan put up a strong fight on court No. 1 forcing a tiebreaker, but the Mean Green's team Jasmine Adams and Lucie Devier held on for the victory.
That wouldn't be the only time that Tairyan and Devier would square off in a tiebreaker. The duo also met at court one singles and the match went to a super tiebreak. In the end Devier escaped with her second close victory defeating Tairyan, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3.
In similar fashion,
Elena Rubio also battled to a super tiebreak. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, Rubio bounced back to take the second with an overwhelming 6-1 decision over Sophia Mummal. Mummal unfortunately held on in the extra frame to record a 6-2, 1-6, 10-2 decision.
UNT held on to take the remaining matches in straight sets for the overall team win.
The Cardinals will be back in action Friday when they return home to host Oral Roberts. The match will take place at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
