HOUSTON, Texas – Sophomore
Elena Rubio led Lamar University with a victory on court No. 6, but that would be the Cardinals only point falling to Rice, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon in Houston. The match, which was originally scheduled to played Saturday was pushed back due to rain in Houston over the weekend.
After dropping the doubles point, LU's Rubio was battling to even up the match at 1. She lost the opening set, 6-4, but battled back to take the second with a 6-3 decision. In the super tiebreak, Rubio held on for an impressive 16-14 victory to take the match and put Big Red on the scoreboard.
Unfortunately, for the LU, the Owls jumped out to strong starts on the other five courts to build to their advantage gained during the doubles competition. Rice rattled off five consecutive singles victories to pick up the overall decision.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they travel north to take on North Texas. No start time has been set for the match.
