SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UTSA's Alissa Steward scored a goal in the 81
st minute of the game to take a 2-0 lead, which would prove to be the key moment in the game as Lamar University put on a late surge that came up just short Friday night in San Antonio. The Roadrunners held on for a 2-1 victory as LU drops to 2-4 on the season.
"It was a tough loss, but we definitely had some good moments tonight," said LU head coach
Steve Holeman. "I like that we fought until the end and were able to get one back late. We now have the toughest team on our schedule with a short turnaround and limited players so it will be a huge challenge. But at the end of all of this, we will be well prepared for competition in the WAC."
UTSA finished the night with an 11-6 advantage in shots, which included a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. Although UTSA recorded 11 shots on the night, the Cardinals defense forced their hosts into some tough shots as only three of their attempts were on goal.
The Roadrunners were also called for four more fouls on the night.
The Roadrunners got out to a quick start getting a goal from Kiran Singh in the game's second minute, but after the early goal the defenses took over. The game would remain scoreless for the next 79 minutes as UTSA took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The game remained 1-0 until Steward's goal in the 81
st minute. Big Red managed to get one back with a goal from
Isela Ramirez just two minutes later but that would be the game's final goal as UTSA held on for the win.
The Cardinals will remain in the Alamo City to prepare for a showdown with Arkansas. The game against the Razorbacks will begin at 11 a.m.
