SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Arkansas Razorbacks scored two goals in the game's first 10 minutes and never looked back defeating Lamar University, 6-0, Sunday afternoon on the final day of competition in the UTSA/Drury Hotels Invite.
The defending Southeastern Conference champions, and 2020 Elite Eight participant, Razorbacks entered the week as one of the nation's elite teams – ranked just outside the nation's top 20 due to early season losses to top 10 Duke and North Carolina. The Razorbacks tacked on three more first half goals to take a 5-0 lead into the locker room at half time.
During the intermission, LU head coach
Steve Holeman and his staff reground and the Red and White neutralized the Arkansas attack in the second half. The Razorbacks could muster only one goal in the game's final 48 minutes.
Big Red faced 36 shots on the afternoon, with 22 of those on target. Despite the barrage of shots LU keeper
Nicole Panis turned away 16 attempts.
"I'm confident we will not face another team on our schedule as athletic and talented as Arkansas," said Holeman. "They are a top-10 program without the number in front of their name. It's easy to see why they won the SEC and advanced to the Elite Eight last season. It's a tough loss but we'll be better in the long run. I'm proud of our team for fighting for 90 minutes."
Arkansas' Taylor Malham got the game's opening goal at the 2:51 mark on a pass from Jessica De Filippo and Parker Goins. The Razorbacks added to their lead just five minutes later with Anna Podojil scored on a penalty kick. Arkansas pushed its lead to three with a goal in the 18
th minute of action. The final goal of the afternoon came in the 63
rd minute.
The road warrior Cardinals have been away from Beaumont for four of the past five games, at the road mentality continued Friday when they travel to Abilene, Texas to open Western Athletic Conference play against Abilene Christian. Big Red will be in Chicago, Ill., two days later to face Chicago State. The game against CSU will the final road contest before Big Red returns home for three.
