SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Lamar University women's soccer program captured their fourth consecutive win as they defeated the league's other Cardinals – UIW –, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
"Today was a grind," said head coach
Steve Holeman. "It definitely wasn't our best soccer, but Sundays on the road are never easy. This was an extremely challenging road trip for us and to come away with six points is pretty big."
The first 45 minutes of the contest went scoreless. It was not until the 56
th minute that Lamar found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie. Junior Makenize Harvey tallied the goal which proved to be her first in the Red and White uniform. Not minutes later, UIW evened things up in the 58
th minute on a penalty kick from Hannah Walsh. Harvey found the back of the net again in the 63
rd minute off an assist from redshirt senior
Esther Okoronkwo. Senior
Madison Ledet also tallied an assist in the match.
Despite winning the contest, UIW outshot the Cardinals, 24-8, with 12 of the shots being on goal while Lamar recorded two shots on goal. Sophomore
Nicole Panis continued her dominance in between the pipes as she recorded a career-high 10 saves.
UP NEXT: The Cardinals will complete their three-game road stand when they travel to Thibodaux, La. to battle Nicholls in Southland Conference action. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
