Cardinals Close Road Swing at Southern

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University head coach Will Davis knew coming into the season that his team would be facing a tough stretch in the middle of March with six road games in a seven-day stretch. The Cardinals will close out the road swing Tuesday with a game at Southern, with a shot at going two games over .500 on the trip.

Already with series win over UT Arlington on the trip, the Cardinals (7-2) go in search of their fourth win in the last five games. If the Cardinals can pick up the victory, they would enter Southland play with an 8-2 record (the sweep of Stephen F. Austin earlier this season was a non-conference contest). The Cardinals are the Southland's only team to have not yet started league play.

LU is coming off a series against UTA that saw the Cardinals record three shutout victories. The Cardinals have recorded four shutouts so far this season. Big Red also enters its non-conference finale with the best winning percentage all Southland schools.

When the Cardinals take the field in Baton Rouge Tuesday, they will be squaring off against a Jaguars squad that is 5-9 (.357) and already six games into their Southwestern Athletic Conference schedule. Southern is coming off a league series at Prairie View A&M where they dropped two of three to the Panthers. The Jaguars enter Tuesday's game having dropped consecutive games and three of their past four.

The Cardinals lead the all-time series over Southern, 9-1 (.900), a recorded which includes a perfect 3-0 mark in Baton Rouge. The lone Southern victory in the series came during the 1982 season. Big Red has rattled off six-straight wins since then. The last time the two schools met on the diamond was in 2019 when LU recorded a 6-5 decision.

First pitch for Tuesday's game is slated for 6 p.m. Following the game, the Cardinals return home to open an eight-game homestand – and Southland Conference play – beginning Friday, Mar. 19th against Central Arkansas. All Southland series have been made four game series this season with the second day of each series being reserved for a doubleheader. The Cardinals will then turn around and host Southeastern Louisiana the following weekend.
