Mustangs prove too strong for Big Red

DALLAS, Texas- The Lamar University men's tennis team (7-3) dropped a 4-1 decision against the Mustangs on Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals came up just short in the doubles, dropping the early point. On court 1, Nicolas Mayr and Axel Vila Antuna dropped a 7-6 decision against the Mustang pairing of Juan Jose Bianchi and Thomas Vaise. SMU then quickly sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court 2, defeating the Cardinal pairing of Carlos Paton Canal and Joshua Sundaram.

Looking to assert the presence on the match, the Cardinals started with intent in singles play. Antuna continued his impressive form this season to etch a 6-1, 7-5 result against Caleb Chakravarthi. However, Antuna's victory proved to be the pick of the bunch for what proved to be a disappointing afternoon for the Cardinals who ended their seven-game winning streak. The Mustangs sealed the match with wins on court 3, 4 and 5. Canal came up just short on court 3, dropping a 7-5, 6-4 decision against SMU's Tomas Vaisie. Southland Conference Player of the Week Filippo Salsini dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision on court 4 to Julian Steinhausen. The Mustangs sealed the match with a victory on court 5, with Joshua Taylor falling to SMU's Jan-Simon Vrbsky, 6-3, 6-3.

The Cardinals will return back to action no less than 24 hours after taking to the court against the Mustangs when they travel the short distance across Dallas to UT Arlington. Play is scheduled to begin at 3 PM on Saturday afternoon. Following the match up against the Mavericks, the Cardinals will return to the Family Thompson Tennis Center when they host Baylor on Mar. 22 at 2 PM.
