ARLINGTON, Texas- Just 24 hours after stepping on court against SMU, the Cardinals returned to action against UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks (3-5) proved too strong for Big Red, sweeping a 4-0 decision.
Following defeat against an impressive SMU side yesterday: the Lamar university men's tennis team hoped to return to the winning ways that had seen them ride a 7-game winning streak before losing Friday's match against the Mustangs.
However, UT Arlington came out firing and sealed the early doubles point thanks to wins on court 1 and court 2. The Cardinal pairing of
Nicolas Mayr and
Axel Vila Antuna dropped their match against Alan Sau Franco and Alejandro Hayen 6-4, with the one break of serve proving to be the deciding factor in the match. Court 2 went a similar way with the Mavericks duo of Caffarena Solano and Nick Beamish sealing a convincing 6-2 decision against
Carlos Paton Canal and
Joshua Sundaram. The Cardinals did etch a win on court 3 thanks to the in-form pairing of
Filippo Salsini and
Joshua Taylor, the Cardinal duo closed out a tightly contested tiebreak to seal the set 7-6. The victory moved the Cardinal pairing to five wins in six doubles matches this season.
The Mavericks went onto to seal a convincing victory over the Cardinals thanks to wins in all of the singles matches contended. Following triumph in singles play the previous day, against the Mustangs, Vila Antuna was unable to continue his winning trend. Dropping a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Angel Diaz on court 1. The Mavericks closed out the tie with wins on court 3 and court 4. UT Arlington's Hayen defeated Paton Canal on court 3, 6-3, 6-1 and Sau Franco came out on top on court 4 against Salsini with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
The Cardinals will return home for their next fixture when they host Baylor University (16-3) at the Family Thompson tennis center. Play is due to begin at 2 PM.
