BEAUMONT, Texas – Due to the possibility of a World Series game seven, Lamar University has moved its exhibition contest with St. Thomas to 6 p.m. at the Montagne Center. The game was originally slated for a 7 p.m. start.
The exhibition will serve as the official start to the
Alvin Brooks era. Taking over as head coach in April, the Cardinals Hall of Honor member joined LU after a successful stint as an assistant at Houston, where he helped build a resurgent Cougars' program. Brooks closed out his career at Houston by helping the Cougars advance to the 2021 Final Four.
The Cardinals enter the 2021-22 season with six returning letterwinners, and three returning starters, including leading returning scorer
Davion Buster. In addition to the returning talent on the team, Brooks and his staff added several newcomers to the roster including Austin Peay transfer
Jordyn Adams, who was the 2020 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. The Silsbee, Texas native returns to Southeast Texas with two more years of eligibility remaining with the Cardinals.
Adams is one of several Southeast Texans playing for the hometown team this season as Big Red's roster includes six players from the area, including Beaumont native
Kasen Harrison who was the Southland's leading freshman scorer, and was just edged out in the voting for the league's rookie of the year award last season. In addition to Harrison and Adams, the Cardinals' roster also consists of
Valentin Catt (Orangefield, Texas),
Mason Senigaur (Beaumont, Texas),
Brock McClure (Lumberton, Texas) and
Clayton Carpenter (Beaumont, Texas).
The Red and White will tip off the regular season Tuesday, Nov. 9, against Wiley College. The game against Wiley will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center.
