Cardinals Softball Drops Season Opener

AUSTIN, Texas – The 2020 Lamar University softball season got started on Friday when they participated in the annual Texas Classic, but their season opener saw a different story as the Cardinals dropped their season opener to Wichita State, 14-0.

The Cardinals could not get anything going their way as the Shockers went up 5-0 after the first. Lamar's Shannon Klaus got the first Cardinal hit of 2020 in the bottom of the first, but strong pitching by Wichita State stopped the bats of the Cardinals.

After going through their rotation in the first, the Shockers added on seven runs to push their lead to 12-0 in the bottom of the second. Junior Shelby Mixon saw the circle for the first time in her Cardinal career, tossing 3.1 innings allowing earning four runs on six hits.

Three Lamar freshmen saw action in their first collegiate outing. Freshmen Hannah Kinkade, Felixia Hinojosa and Nicolette Ramirez all got the start for their first appearances. Incoming transfers Mixon and Mackenzie Brown

Sophomore Mackenzie Brown finished the afternoon going 2-for-2 and tallied two RBIs in her first outing as a Cardinal. Klaus went 1-for-2 on the afternoon and recorded a run in the loss.

Lamar returns to action at the Texas Classic this evening when they play the host, No. 6 Texas, at McCombs Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcasted on the Longhorn Network. The Cardinals will concluded the weekend of action on Saturday, February 8th against Colorado State and Maryland.
