BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University was dominant picking up their third and fourth victories of the season by sweeping a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M Sunday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. Big Red won the opening match, 7-0, and returned for the second match to post a 4-0 victory.
The wins move the Cardinals to 4-7 (.364) on the young season.
The Cardinals took an early 1-0 advantage after picking up a clutch tiebreak victory at the No. 2 doubles position. With a 1-0 lead in hand, the Cardinals transitioned their momentum over to the singles competition. Freshman
Filippo Salsini gave the Red and White a 2-0 lead after his straight-sets winner on court six. He defeated PVAMU's Tyrese Washington, 6-0, 6-1.
The Cardinals then turned to the upper half of their lineup to put the match away. Big Red got consecutive straight-set victories from juniors
Nicolas Mayr and
Carlos Paton Canal. Mayr defeated Juan Malham Viada, 6-3, 6-3, and Paton Canal followed suit with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over PVAMU's Jorge Caballero on court No. 2.
With the overall team victory in hand, the Cardinals closed out the scoring by picking up singles wins on the three remaining courts (1, 4 and 5).
After readjusting their lineup for the second match, the Cardinals returned to the court 45 minutes later for the second. Despite the switch, the Cardinals posted a similar result. After taking all three doubles matches, the Cardinals once again entered singles play with a 1-0 lead. For the second consecutive match it was Salsini who gave the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage with a dominant performance at No. 3 singles. He defeated the Panthers' Jaun Malham Viada, 6-1, 6-1, for the point.
