COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Lamar University softball program went on a hitting spree in the 10-2, five-inning victory over St. John's in the Texas A&M Invitational but fell in their second game on the day against Texas A&M, 7-4.
WIN VS. ST. JOHN'S
Sophomore
Aaliyah Ruiz was able to pick up her second win of the season with a strong 5.0 inning performance where she gave up just two runs on four hits during the Cardinal victory. Ruiz struck out four batters en route to the win.
It was the Red Storm that got on the scoreboard first, but it did not take long before Lamar connected with the plate. The Cards used a seven-run first inning to ensue the victory. Freshman
Hannah Kinkade had a career-day at the plate.
The Schertz, Texas native, went 2-for-2 in the morning with both hits being home runs, including the game-sealing victory home run in the bottom of the fifth. Kinkade finished the game with two runs and two RBIs to add to her performance.
Senior
Shannon Klaus finished the contest going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the contest. Klaus continued her big bat rolling from the previous day that helped lead her team to a victory over Binghamton.
LOSS AT TEXAS A&M
The bats came out on fire for the Cardinals in game two of day two. Lamar went up 3-0 heading into the fourth inning. It was the bat of senior
Jade Lewis that got the Cardinal scoring off to a start when she drove a hit down the left field line that ended up being a double by Lewis as she was able to get two RBIs on the play with Kinkade and senior
Shannon Klaus at second and third, respectively.
The Aggie pitching staff needed a little work before they were able to silence the bats of Lamar. The Cardinals were able to get out to a 4-0 lead through four innings before Texas A&M tied the ball game up at four a piece in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cards were led by freshman
Hannah Kinkade who finished the afternoon going 1-or-3 with two runs and an RBI. Senior
Jade Lewis got the start in the circle for the Cards and tossed 3.0 innings while only giving up three runs.
UP NEXT: The Cardinals will play host to the annual Cardinal Classic that will be at the LU Softball Complex from February 21 to 23 with the tournament field including St. John's, Northern Colorado and your Lamar Cardinals.
