Cards Add Scoring Punch to Lineup

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – High school standouts Brock McClure (Lumberton, Texas) and Avontez Ledet (Breaux Bridge, La.) have signed National Letters of Intent and will continue their education at Lamar University announced head basketball coach Tic Price Wednesday afternoon.

McClure (6-6, 195, G/F) becomes the not only the first player from Lumberton High School to sign with the Cardinals, but the first Raider to sign a Division I scholarship.

"Both of these guys are high volume shooters," said LU head coach Tic Price. "When we began the recruiting process that was our No. 1 focus. We wanted guys who could shoot the ball – stat sheet stuffers. Both signees are complete players and that really drew our attention. We've watched these guys for years and we had really good relationships with their coaches. Both McClure and Ledet have continued to evolve and improve their game."

A two-star prospect, McClure becomes the 11th southeast Texas player to join the program since Price took over has head coach during the 2013-14 season. Known as a sharp-shooter, McClure has been considered by many as the best player to come out of Lumberton High School. McClure was a double-double machine during his junior campaign averaging better than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He also had the ability to help teammates get into better scoring position averaging 4.6 assists per game. McClure enters his senior season as the reigning District 22-4A Offensive Player of the Year.

"McClure is a local kid we've had on the radar since he was a sophomore," said Price. "He is the true definition of a gym rat. All he wants to do is get better. I really like that about him. He's an excellent kid who comes from a strong family. Being from Lumberton only added to our interest level."

Standing 6-6, McClure brings added length to Big Red's roster. He has a 6-5 wingspan and has the ability to play multiple positions in Price's offense. It was his versatility on the court that helped him land an all-region honor following his junior season. A first-team Super Gold selection, McClure enters his senior year having scored more than 1,400 points.

Known as a scorer, Ledet (6-2, 156, G) brings an all-round game with him to Beaumont. The Cecilia High School product averaged 21 points during his junior season, while pulling down five rebounds and dishing out five assists per game. An All-Acadiana selection, Ledet is one of the state's top long-range shooters converting 42 percent of his three-point attempts. Ledet was named Team MVP following a junior campaign that saw him garner first-team all-district honors and an honorable mention 4A all-state recognition.

A two-star prospect, Ledet guided the program to one of its best runs in program history last season as Cecilia advanced to the 4A state quarterfinals. It was the farthest Cecilia had advanced since 2002. Ledet scored a game-high 29 points in the quarterfinal contest. A versatile athlete, Ledet is also a standout jumper on the Cecilia track and field team.

"Avontez is a living version of a microwave in terms of how he can heat up on the court," said Price. "He's a young man who can make shots from anywhere on the floor. We've added some real firepower to the team with his signing."

The addition of Ledet and McClure come at the perfect time for the Cardinals, as LU will be losing three players to attrition at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season. Those loses include a guard (Ellis Jefferson), forward (Anthony Cameron) and center (Avery Sullivan).
