LU vs SLU

Cards Hope to Rebound in Hammond

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas - Looking to return to the win column, Lamar University (5-6, 0-1 SLC) travels to Hammond, La., on Saturday to face Southeastern Louisiana (5-9, 0-1 SLC). The Cardinals and Lions will meet for the 37th time this weekend.

THE LAST TIME OUT - SLC OPENER AT NEW ORLEANS - SEPTEMBER 24

Taking the first set but stumbling a bit in each of the next three, LU fell just short Tuesday in a four-set loss to the University of New Orleans (8-7, 1-0 SLC). Big Red led in each set but couldn't hold on through Privateer runs.

Dannisha House led LU in kills with nine and poured in two blocks and two aces for a total of 12 points, and Abigale Nash had eight kills and nine digs, coming just short of her eighth double-double on the year. Erin Pequeno had 18 digs, and Annika Slovak had 31 assists as the primary setter.

Lamar at Southeastern Louisiana - September 28

SLU is 5-9 overall this year and 0-1 in conference play after falling in five sets to a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-6, 1-0) team that was picked fifth in the SLC preseason poll. Jeremy White is in his first year as the head of the program after taking over in December 2018 following seven years under Jim Smoot (47-152). White comes to SLU from Northwestern Oklahoma State where he was 38-25 in two seasons.

As a team the Lions are hitting at a .206 clip with 627 kills as a team - both ranking fifth in the SLC. They've surrendered an opposing hitting percentage of .228, one of the highest in the league, and over 650 kills, also ranking near the bottom of SLC defenses. 10.85 assists per set as a team ranks 10th, and their 11.67 assists per set surrendered to other teams is the fourth-most in league play. Blocking isn't a huge part of the Lions' game with just 87.0 blocks this year (7th in the SLC), and they've been prone to giving up a lot at the net with 108.5 total blocks against - fourth most in conference. Service reception is another area Lamar has a chance to shine in with SLU giving up the second-most aces per set in the Southland.

Sam Gomez is one of the most accurate attacking middle blockers in the SLC with a .311 attack percentage and 111 kills, and Jodi Edo isn't far behind with a .292 clip and 124 kills this year. Caroline Golden leads the Lions in kills with 135 total, averaging about 2.65 a set. Baylee Laskoskie is the team's assists leader with 346, averaging 7.69 a set, and Alexis Pratt (166 digs, 3.19/set), Golden (139 digs, 2.73/set), and Jolie Hidalgo (102 digs, 2.00/set) are the team's defensive leads. Edo is the primary blocker with 44 this year.

Up Next - Stephen F. Austin - SLC Home Opener - October 3

Lamar returns home on Oct. 3 for their first SLC home match of the year, hosting the SLC defending champs, Stephen F. Austin (12-1, 0-0 SLC).
